Electric Mini Truck Buying Guide: Payload, Bed Type, Motor and Range

Short answer: Specify an electric mini truck by payload first (500–1,200 kg), then body (flatbed, box van or tipping dump bed), then motor (4 kW for flat routes, 5 kW for hills or full loads) and finally battery size for a range that covers a full day with a 20–30% reserve.

Electric mini trucks do the work of a small diesel pickup on farms, campuses, resorts and narrow village streets — at a fraction of the running cost. Here is how to specify one so it actually fits the job.

1. Start with payload

Weigh a typical load. Our range spans about 500 kg (the off-road style pickup) to 1,200 kg (the farm cargo truck). Running permanently at the rated maximum shortens tyre, brake and battery life — leave a margin.

2. Pick a body

  • Flatbed with drop sides: the most versatile; easy to load from three sides.
  • Box van: weather and theft protection for parcels, food or tools — see the LiFePO4 van cargo truck.
  • Tipping dump bed: for soil, harvest and waste — see the M1 dump pickup.

3. Choose the motor

Most models use a 72V AC motor. A 4 kW motor suits flat routes; choose 5 kW if you climb hills fully loaded. Some models offer a 6-phase permanent-magnet motor for better efficiency, or an integrated differential motor with high and low gears for steep farm tracks.

4. Size the battery for a full day

Quoted ranges of 80–120 km assume moderate loads on level ground. Add 20–30% reserve for hills, heat and stop-start driving. If the truck works two shifts, choose lithium and a fast charger or plan a mid-day top-up.

5. Details that matter on site

  • Turning radius under 5 m for tight yards.
  • Front disc / rear drum brakes as a minimum for loaded descents.
  • Ground clearance — up to about 350 mm on off-road styled models.
  • Reversing camera and LED lights for night work.

Frequently asked questions

How far can an electric mini truck drive on one charge?

Typically 80–120 km depending on battery size, load and terrain. Plan routes with a 20–30% reserve.

Can electric mini trucks drive on public roads?

That depends on national rules. Some markets allow registration as a light goods vehicle or L7e quadricycle; others restrict them to private sites such as farms and campuses.

What is the difference between 4 kW and 5 kW motors?

The 5 kW motor provides more torque for hills and full loads; the 4 kW motor is slightly more efficient on flat routes.
